Vessa, Chios

Four Km from Elata, 19 Km from the town, you will find Vessa, the next village in which castles predominate. It is worth wandering around the narrow streets of Vessa to admire the architecture of the houses which have remained intact and visiting the church of St. Demetrios to admire its woodcut icon screen. Vessa is a small village but it’s characteristic of the medieval villages of southern Chios and it’s also well preserved through the years, especially the corner towers of its castle and parts of the fortification wall.

Comment:I’m from Vessa, my father was born there and my mother’s from Kythera. We have two homes in Vessa one 400 years old and the other nearly 1000. I was just there in the summer of 2007 and I had the time of my life. I hadn’t been back since 2000. It was truely an incredible adventure.

Comment:I would love to know how the town of Vessa, in Chios was named. What the origin of the name was, and when the town was founded. Thank you for your time. Respectfully, Frank Vessa
