Mosque -Tzami |
The lengthy Turkish occupation of the island is evident from various monuments in the town. East of Vounaki Square is the mosque (Tzami) built in the 1800’s, whose minaret and courtyard fountain are still preserved. Following the liberation of the island, it was used as an archaeological museum. Today it houses Byzantine and post-Byzantine finds. In the town of Chios are two other mosques preserved in good condition, one is at Frangomahala and the other, the Bairakli Tzami is inside the fortress. The latter was built in the early part of this century, to replace an older one. |
