Psara

PsaraPsara is a small island close to the northwestern part of Chios. The birthplace of revolutionary war hero Admiral Kanaris, as well as of other significant heroes of the war of Independence like Apostolis, Nicodemus and Vratsanos, Psara devoted its merchant fleets -the third largest in 1820s Greece after those of Hydra and Spetses -to the cause of independence, and paid dearly for it. Vexed beyond endurance, the Turks landed overwhelming forces in 1824 to stamp out this nest of resistance. Perhaps 3000 of the 30,000 inhabitants escaped in small boats which were rescued by a French fleet, but the majority retreated to a hilltop powder magazine and blew it (and themselves) up rather than surrender.

Port of PsaraThe nationalist poet Dhionysios Solomos immortalized the incident in famous stanzas:
On the Black Ridge of PsarU,
Glory walks alone.
She meditates on her heroes
And wears in her hair a wreath
Made from a few dry weeds
Left on the barren ground.
Psara, means "the grey things" in Greek, never recovered from the holocaust. The Turks burned whatever houses and vegetation the blast had missed, and the permanent population barely exceeds four hundred. In modern times a 1980s revitalization project was instigated by a French-Greek descendant of Kanaris and a Greek team.

The port was improved, mains electricity and pure water provided, a secondary school opened and cu1tural links between France and the island established, though so far this has not been reflected in increased tourist numbers.

Comment:It is with great joy that I will be arriving on Psara in just a few weeks. I look forward to spending more than the mere 12 hours of my last visit. It is my intention to feel the life that my father loved so much and to be of service to the island and it’s people. I am a teacher/counselor/artist/musician and if there is anything I can offer to anyone there I would love to give it for all that my culture and heritage has given to me. Yasas!

Comment:My father John Nick Damigos was born on the island of Psara in 1905. He left his beloved island around 1920’s for good. All I ever remember him talking about as a young girl was returning to his island. He worked very hard while he lived here to support his family in the US promising that he would take us all home with him. He died on September 26, 1968 never having the opportunity to go back to his beloved island in the sea> I was only 10 years old when he passed. In July of 2007 I was finally blessed to visit Psara at 49 years of age. When my father’s little island of Psara came into focus for the first time...I cried from a very deep place in my heart that belonged to only my father and me and so I called my two sons from my cell phone at that moments to share the full circle heritage. I was determined to be very attentive to all that I could see. I walked, ate dinner and painted in the mere 12 hours I had on the island. Since then I have promised myself that I would return. Six months later it was my intent to stay for 7 days but once I was on the island of Chios there was no ferry as a result of heavy winds. Sadly I had to return to The States without a visit to Psara. It is with great joy that I have just purchased my flight ticket to return this Summer 2010. I am hoping to bring my son Christos with me this time. I can’t wait to stay and feel the satisfaction that is the dream of both my father and myself and now my children to return to our island of Psara. Yamas!

Comment:i visited the home of my ancesters in 1999 as a fifth generation from psara.i met my grandmothers 3rd cousin magaro marinos, the last moros, our line on psara ,it was a joy to meet her at he age of 101 years old, it felt like she had waited for me to visit.she remembered my great grand father and the family still have photo’s of him.i met some of my other relatives from magaro, her son socrates marinos, his sisters, peggy glakkos and despina bechlivenos they are proud and beautiful people,my cousin maria katatkouzinos and her daughter despina, while i was there i learnt some of the history of he island through socrates, which i needed to know. "about why my for fathers left psara",i always think of my family there but find it hard to speak to them on the telephone as they speak very little engish and my greek is non exsistant, but for few cordial words. i feel both joy and sadness for psara and its people.joy for the wonderful traditional lifestyle and sad because it is so hard for some residents to live comfortablely ,especially for the elderly. i went fishing with socrates and had a beautiful day ,but was astonished at the amount of work he had to put in, for a few fish,a hard way to make a living at 65 yrs of age.i admire my family on the island for there ternacity ,courage and family spirit ,something we have lost in the family in new zealand and now also in australia .we are the seeds blowing on the breeze ,we are scattering and starting to migrate again. love to my family on the beautiful island of psara i hope to see you the next time i visit greece , maybe 2011 with some good fortune bye till we meet again
