Prehistoric Psara

prehistoric tools

Psara is a small island close to the northwestern part of Chios. Homer refers to it  as Psyrie. Thanks to its privileged location in the center of Aegean Sea, it had played a very important role  in the trade routes of the region.
At the area of Archontiki on the west coast of the island, there was a Mycenaean settlement and cemetery in the middle of the 2nd millenium BC, extending at least 100 m. along the length of the shore and part of which is now underwater. The graves are cists of varied dimensions.
Remnants of walls and pottery shreds, perhaps of earlier periods, have been spotted in the area adjacent  to the cemetery, In the later years too, however, life continued on the island.
