St George Prastia Siderountas

The single-aisle church of St. George was built in an inaccessible area of Prastia between Siderounda and Volissos in northern Chios. According to the builder’s inscription, the church was erected by the donors Battista Giustiniani de Campi and his wife Bigota in 1415.
The interior of the church is fully decorated with frescoes, but a great part of them are covered with soot, making it difficult to distinguish all the scenes. |

| The Supplication is depicted in a section of the conch, while in its semi-cylindrical area below the Supplication and up to the built-in altar is the painting of four priests facing the center where the Scene of Melismos is depicted. In the lower zone of the main church are icons of full-figured saints in military garb. Of special interest is the scene of St. George on horseback at the eastern end of the northern wall. |

From a technical point, it appears that the icon of St. George was painted in the classic tradition that was revived in the period of Paleologos (14th century), and that Chios was exposed to the contemporary art of the larger centers in the 15th century.
The dedication of an orthodox church in an agricultural area by a Genoese can be interpreted partly as a political act to draw the Greek populace closer to the Genoese in the face of the Turkish danger , as well as a means of showing respect for local tradition. |
