Nenita is one of the bigger villages of south Chios along with Pyrgi, Kalamoti, Olympi and Mesta. It is located 17 km. south of Chios town, having a panoramic view of Asia Minor coast. The name has derived from the Greek word "neoktita" meaning "recently bought" and it’s referring to farmlands acquired in the 16th century. The village was built like the others medieval Mastic- villages but suffered a lot at the earthquake that occurred in 1881 and nowadays it partly keeps it’s medieval architecture. The heaven of Nenita is Vokaria, one of the closest points of the island to Asia Minor. Next to the village is the monastery of Panmegiston Taxiarhon, founded in 1305. |
