The church of the Older Taxiarchi, a vaulted one-aisled basilica, became two-aisled in 1794. The north aisle contains a cross-vaulted ceiling while in the old area there are blind arches with decorative phialostomia and the circular conch of the sanctuary. Important frescoes were discovered within the interior while its woodcarved iconostas with many scenes from the Old and New Testaments, is a work dating back to 1833, representing the high standard of local woodcarving. Perhaps the oldest iconostas is that of St. Thaleleos in Aghio Galas (1711). Other important churches of Mesta are St. Paraskevi, St. Vlasios (1739), St. John, and the Great Taxiarchi. |
