Later Buildings |
By the end of the of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, neo-classic buildings started to be built in Chora. Some of them were public structures, such as the National Bank, the Boy’s High School, the Koraes Library, while other were mansions of wealthy Chian citizens. Houses imitating the style of the neighboring Izmir were also built. |

The Boys’ High School, built in 1884 and extended in 1929, comprises the last building structure of the famous School of Chios which was one of the famous cultural centers of Hellenism in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The school maintained a library of 12.000 volumes and a printing press which the Turks destroyed in 1822. |

The building of the National Bank of Greece is a typical sample of late neoclassical architecture. It is a stone-made, three-storied building with an elevated basement and expanded third floor. The interior of the building is also interesting, since it is specially modeled to house the National Bank of Greece in the ground-floor and the residence of its Director on the first floor. The building and the surrounding area has been identified by a 1986 ministerial decree as a work of art. The building was constructed in 1926. Due to the increasing needs of the Bank, there have been various interventions from time to time in the interior. The last approval for works was given in 1994 to the architect G. Papazoglou who has also conducted the study. |
