Koini is a small village at the southeast part of the island, about 23 Km from Chios town. The village was a medieval one like those of Mesta, Olympoi, etc. It was almost completely ruined and half the inhabitants died at the earthquake that occurred in 1881. There are a lot of chapels in the village, the main church is Zoodochos Pygi built in 1879. The lower part of Koini has suffered the less from the earthquake and therefore it is the better preserved part of the village.
