Kataraktis

Kataraktis is a littoral village, 16 km south of Chios, with a small beautiful port for trawlers and small fishing boats. The village has a beautiful beach and a lot of taverns serving fresh sea-food.
In the area of Kataraktis there is the nunnery of Panagia Rouchouni and also the church of Aghios Ioannis of Argentis built in mediaeval times. |

| The old Kataraktis was built 2 Km southwest in the interior. It is now abandoned, though it attracts the interest of many historians for its ruined medieval houses and Byzantine churches. Aghios Ioannis o Argentis is the most famous of them. It is a 14th century basilica thoroughly rebuilt except for its vestibule which retains the blind arches, ceramic decoration and the well preserved frescoes. The wooden iconostasis is also of considerable artistic value. |
