Isihastirio Evangelismou was founded in 1962 by the ship owning family of Panaghou and Katingo Pateras. The monastery, built in Byzantine-style architecture, contains frescoes by the famous hagiographer Fotis Kontoglou whose painting technique is extremely austere. The 18 monks who live there, mostly young women, are occupied with hagiography, embroidering in gold, knitting, and the sewing of church vestments.
