Chios Town

Koraes Library as well as the Argentis Ethnological and folklore museum that is located in the same building are the cultural attractions of the town.
Boys’ High School and Koraes library were built in 1792 in order to house the famous School of Chios. This school was the sign of the cultural contribution of Chios to Greece during the 17th , 18th and early 19th century AC. The high standard of living, the powerful merchants and scholars created a very distinctive culture.

Adamantios Koraes (1748 - 1843) is considered to be one of the most important scholars to emerge in modern Greece and one of the most illustrious representatives of the Greek Enlightenment. He lived in France for a long period of time and played major part in the uprising of Greeks against their Turkish conquerors. He proclaimed that his compatriots would only achieve liberation when they learned to read and write, when they acquired a knowledge of the treasures  of Greek antiquity, and turned its attention to education.

Neophytos Vamvas, Koraes’ student, was the director (1815 - 1822) of the School of Chios. During his tenure, Greek, Latin and Turkish were taught along with mathematics, painting and music. The School was destroyed by the Turks in 1822 and a few years later Vamvas went to the liberated mainland and became one of the first professors of the newly founded National University of Greece.
The Tourist Office of Chios Municipality will be glad to offer information and support to all the visitors of the City of Chios.
