East of Vounaki Square is the mosque (Tzami) built in the 1800’s, whose minaret and courtyard fountain are still preserved. Following the liberation of the island, it was used as an archaeological museum. The Vounaki Fountain is strongly reminiscent of the monument to Lysistrati, in miniature, while Melek Pasha’s is an example of Turkish baroque. This marble fountain is square with a wooden roof and double-carved arches adorned with plant motifs. |

By the end of the of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, neo-classic buildings started to be built in Chora. Some of them were public structures, such as the National Bank, the Boy’s High School, the Koraes Library, while other were mansions of wealthy Chian citizens. Houses imitating the style of the neighboring Izmir were also built. Besides the historical monuments, the city of Chios provides hours of relaxation, pleasure and enjoyment on its beautiful clean beaches, at its busy colorful port, its interesting and restful Municipal Park, the picturesque taverns with fresh fish and the beautiful villas and estates among the orchards of Kambos. |

Chios is the Cultural Center of the Eastern Aegean because of the intense cultural life and the cultural awareness of its inhabitants. This is in part due of the presence of the Homerion Cultural Center of the Municipality of Chios, the Municipal and Regional Theater of the North Aegean, the Municipal Art Gallery, etc. The main commercial road of Chios is Aplotaria St., the name derives from the Greek word aplonoun (= spread out) because the old merchants were coming there to spread out their wares to show them to buyers. At the end of Aplotaria St. to the south you’ll meet the Cathedral of Aghioi Victores which was built after the earthquake of 1881. Next to the Cathedral is located the Koraes library and at the other side of the road the Boy’s high School. |
