Temple of Athena Polias

| On the northern hill, named Prophet Elias (30m high) an ancient settlement was built and on the southern hill, remains of an early Byzantine fortress above the pre-historic (Early Bronze) settlement came to light. The fortress was built at the early 7th century AD as a citadel against the Arabs. Coins of emperor Leon V (813 - 820) as well as remains of a small chapel, indicate that for a short period in the 9th century there was a resettlement of the population without any particular economic development. As the excavations continued in the western part of the harbor, they brought to light an early Christian Basilica that mainly built with stones from a ancient temple. The foundations of the temple lie near the Basilica (church). The Christian basilica succeeded an early Roman one which we know little about. The Christian basilica had two aisles with a semi-circular apse and a narthex at whose south end was a niche which appears to have been a diakonikon, a place for offerings. West of the narthex was an open atrium with three colonnades. Several pieces of black and white mosaic found on the atrium, probably belong to the Roman building. Southwest of the basilica there was a circular baptistery with a cross-shaped font with marble facing. |
